Sachant qu\u2019ils se produisent sur les m\u00eames zones de faille, une \u00ab pr\u00e9vision \u00bb empirique est bas\u00e9e sur la possibilit\u00e9 statistique de leur occurrence en un m\u00eame lieu. Mais, si une cartographie d\u00e9taill\u00e9e des r\u00e9gions \u00e0 risque a \u00e9t\u00e9 \u00e9tablie, la\u00a0<b>pr\u00e9vision<\/b> reste encore un domaine tr\u00e8s al\u00e9atoire.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<p>[\/vc_column_text][vc_column_text]<\/p>\n<div id=\"c69958\" class=\"csc-default\">\n<div class=\"csc-textpic csc-textpic-intext-left csc-textpic-equalheight\">\n<div class=\"csc-textpic-text\">\n<h2 class=\"bodytext\">S\u00e9ismes et volcans sont-ils li\u00e9s ?<\/h2>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div id=\"c68078\" class=\"csc-default\">\n<p class=\"bodytext\">Les\u00a0<b>\u00e9ruptions volcaniques<\/b>\u00a0ne sont pas li\u00e9es \u00e0 de gros s\u00e9ismes (et r\u00e9ciproquement). En revanche, ces deux ph\u00e9nom\u00e8nes trouvent leur explication dans une m\u00eame cause : l\u2019activit\u00e9 interne de notre plan\u00e8te.\u00a0<b>S\u00e9ismes et \u00e9ruptions volcaniques<\/b>\u00a0se produisent souvent aux fronti\u00e8res de\u00a0<a href=\"\/science\/terre\/tectonique-des-plaques\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><b>plaques tectoniques<\/b><\/a>, l\u00e0 o\u00f9 les blocs s\u2019\u00e9cartent, coulissent ou entrent en collision.<\/p>\n<p class=\"bodytext\">N\u00e9anmoins, s\u00e9ismes et volcans peuvent parfois \u00eatre \u00e9troitement li\u00e9s : les \u00e9ruptions s\u2019accompagnent souvent de petits <b>s\u00e9ismes volcaniques<\/b>, g\u00e9n\u00e9r\u00e9s par les battements du magma sur les parois de la chambre magmatique, par son intrusion en force dans la cro\u00fbte ou lors de l\u2019ouverture des conduits \u00e9ruptifs : on parle alors de \u00ab\u00a0<b>tr\u00e9mor volcanique\u00a0<\/b>\u00bb.<\/p>\n<h2 class=\"bodytext\">Les ondes<\/h2>\n<\/div>\n<div id=\"c68079\" class=\"csc-default\">\n<p class=\"bodytext\">Un m\u00eame s\u00e9isme g\u00e9n\u00e8re quatre principaux types d\u2019ondes, aux effets tr\u00e8s diff\u00e9rents : les\u00a0<b>ondes P<\/b>, premi\u00e8res arriv\u00e9es, ont un effet de compression, comme un ressort.<\/p>\n<p class=\"bodytext\">Par leur effet cisaillant, les\u00a0<b>ondes S<\/b>\u00a0font plus de d\u00e9g\u00e2ts.<br \/>\nLes\u00a0<b>ondes de surface L et R<\/b> sont \u00ab\u00a0guid\u00e9es\u00a0\u00bb par la surface terrestre. Leur vibration composite les rend particuli\u00e8rement destructrices.<\/p>\n<p class=\"bodytext\">Les vitesses des ondes sismiques varient de 3 \u00e0 14 km\/s, selon les milieux travers\u00e9s.<\/p>\n<p class=\"bodytext\">Chaque discontinuit\u00e9 d\u00e9vie le trajet d&rsquo;une onde par r\u00e9fraction, ou la r\u00e9fl\u00e9chit selon l&rsquo;angle d&rsquo;incidence. Les ondes S ne se propagent pas dans le noyau externe de la Terre, car elles ne sont pas transmises par les liquides.<\/p>\n<p class=\"bodytext\">L\u2019<b>\u00e9chelle de Richter<\/b>\u00a0est une \u00e9chelle \u00ab\u00a0ouverte\u00a0\u00bb (non limit\u00e9e \u00e0 9) mesurant la magnitude (M) d&rsquo;un s\u00e9isme. La magnitude, mesur\u00e9e en un lieu donn\u00e9, est l&rsquo;expression d&rsquo;une quantit\u00e9 d&rsquo;\u00e9nergie lib\u00e9r\u00e9e.
