Dans l\u2019absolu, oui ! On estime \u00e0 une centaine de millions le nombre d\u2019objets de taille sup\u00e9rieure \u00e0 10 m\u00e8tres \u00e9voluant entre le Soleil et Jupiter. Les crat\u00e8res d\u2019impact terrestres sont l\u00e0 pour attester des nombreuses rencontres pass\u00e9es, \u00ab\u00a0fr\u00e9quentes\u00a0\u00bb \u00e0 l\u2019\u00e9chelle des temps g\u00e9ologiques. T\u00f4t ou tard, cela se reproduira. Au demeurant, c\u2019est l\u00e0 un ph\u00e9nom\u00e8ne plut\u00f4t banal dans le ballet plan\u00e9taire. N\u00e9anmoins, ramen\u00e9e \u00e0 l\u2019\u00e9chelle de temps humaine, la probabilit\u00e9 de rencontre est minime.[\/vc_column_text][vc_column_text]<\/p>\n<h2>Fr\u00f4lements \u00e0 120\u00a0000 km de la Terre<\/h2>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">Hormis les com\u00e8tes qui nous viennent des confins du Syst\u00e8me solaire, quelques milliers d\u2019ast\u00e9ro\u00efdes, rep\u00e9r\u00e9s \u00e0 ce jour, ont une orbite qui les rapproche occasionnellement de la Terre ; on les appelle NEAs (Near Earth Asteroids). Parmi eux, ceux dont l\u2019orbite croise celle de la Terre sont baptis\u00e9s g\u00e9ocroiseurs. Ces ast\u00e9ro\u00efdes qui errent dans l\u2019Espace ont \u00e9t\u00e9, \u00e0 un moment donn\u00e9, \u00e9ject\u00e9s de la \u00ab\u00a0Ceinture principale\u00a0\u00bb, cet anneau o\u00f9 des blocs de toutes tailles tournent autour du Soleil entre les orbites de Mars et de Jupiter. Une fois sortis des rangs, ils entament une vie solitaire, parfois pendant des dizaines de millions d\u2019ann\u00e9es. Certains viendront peut-\u00eatre un jour \u00ab\u00a0rencontrer\u00a0\u00bb la Terre.<\/p>\n<p>[\/vc_column_text][vc_column_text]<\/p>\n<h2>Objets sous surveillance<\/h2>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">Outre le r\u00f4le pr\u00e9pond\u00e9rant de la NASA dans ce domaine, une surveillance des ast\u00e9ro\u00efdes existe au sein de quelques grands organismes de recherche spatiale, notamment europ\u00e9ens.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">Ce long travail de veille et d\u2019observation autorise \u00e0 penser que l\u2019on a d\u00e9sormais identifi\u00e9 la plupart des g\u00e9ocroiseurs de taille sup\u00e9rieure \u00e0 10 km. En revanche, cette estimation reste tr\u00e8s partielle pour des diam\u00e8tres inf\u00e9rieurs. Cela laisse planer un doute&#8230; Ainsi l\u2019ast\u00e9ro\u00efde 2002 MN, d\u2019une taille de 100 m\u00e8tres, ne fut-il d\u00e9couvert que trois jours apr\u00e8s \u00eatre pass\u00e9 au plus pr\u00e8s de la Terre, le 14 juin 2002. \u00c0 la vitesse de 38 000 km\/h, il venait de \u00ab\u00a0fr\u00f4ler\u00a0\u00bb notre plan\u00e8te \u00e0 120 000 km, soit seulement un tiers de la distance Terre\/Lune ! S\u2019il n\u2019avait pas rat\u00e9 la Terre, il aurait pu rayer de la carte une ville comme Paris\u2026<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">Plusieurs fois par an, de petits ast\u00e9ro\u00efdes s\u2019approchent de notre plan\u00e8te ; ainsi, le 8 septembre dernier, deux d&rsquo;entre eux, rep\u00e9r\u00e9s seulement trois jours avant, passaient \u00e0 70 000 et 250 000 km de la Terre. Cela dit, ces petits blocs ont toutes les chances d\u2019\u00eatre enti\u00e8rement d\u00e9sint\u00e9gr\u00e9s en p\u00e9n\u00e9trant dans l\u2019atmosph\u00e8re qui, fort heureusement, joue parfaitement son r\u00f4le de bouclier protecteur !<\/p>\n<p>[\/vc_column_text][vc_column_text]<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">Le risque potentiel d\u2019un ast\u00e9ro\u00efde rep\u00e9r\u00e9 est \u00e9valu\u00e9 en fonction de sa taille et de son orbite. Actuellement, \u00e0 part quelques exceptions, les deux mille g\u00e9ocroiseurs recens\u00e9s sont consid\u00e9r\u00e9s \u00e0 \u00ab\u00a0risque nul\u00a0\u00bb. Et parmi les exceptions, aucune ne semble pr\u00e9senter un important risque de collision. Diverses \u00e9valuations estiment les fr\u00e9quences d\u2019impact sur Terre en fonction de la taille des objets. Voici \u00e0 quoi l\u2019on peut donc s\u2019attendre : un \u00e0 deux objets de 50 m de diam\u00e8tre par si\u00e8cle, un objet de 100 m par mill\u00e9naire, un objet de 1 km (\u00e9nergie \u00e9quivalant \u00e0 l\u2019arsenal nucl\u00e9aire mondial) tous les 300 000 ans, un objet de 10 km (pouvant provoquer une extinction biologique massive) tous les 100 millions d\u2019ann\u00e9es.
