Dans le manteau terrestre, parfois dans la cro\u00fbte, des roches fondent partiellement. Le liquide form\u00e9, moins dense que les roches encaissantes, remonte vers la surface. Au cours du trajet, le magma peut s\u2019arr\u00eater dans un r\u00e9servoir appel\u00e9\u00a0<strong>chambre magmatique<\/strong>, et y s\u00e9journer plusieurs si\u00e8cles. La remont\u00e9e du magma est souvent favoris\u00e9e par des fissures dans la cro\u00fbte terrestre. Le r\u00e9seau de conduits est appel\u00e9 \u00ab chemin\u00e9e volcanique \u00bb. En surface, on obtient diff\u00e9rents produits volcaniques : des liquides (des laves) ; des solides (blocs, bombes, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.vulcania.com\/science\/reperes\/glossaire\/#1668609694206-fdde5179-1d9a1aa2-532d\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">scories<\/a>, cendres, cristaux), et des gaz.<\/p>\n<p>Une<strong>\u00a0\u00e9ruption volcanique<\/strong>\u00a0marque l\u2019arriv\u00e9e \u00e0 la surface de la Terre de magmas d\u2019origine profonde. L\u2019\u00e9nergie lib\u00e9r\u00e9e lors d\u2019une \u00e9ruption est \u00e9norme : lors des \u00e9ruptions majeures, elle peut atteindre des millions de fois la puissance de la bombe atomique largu\u00e9e sur Hiroshima en 1945.<\/p>\n<p>Certains volcans vivent plusieurs centaines de milliers d\u2019ann\u00e9es, voire quelques millions d\u2019ann\u00e9es. D\u2019autres naissent et, apr\u00e8s seulement quelques jours d\u2019activit\u00e9, s\u2019endorment \u00e0 tout jamais. Par convention, on appelle \u00ab\u00a0<strong>volcan actif<\/strong>\u00a0\u00bb un volcan qui a eu au moins une \u00e9ruption dans les derniers 10 000 ans.<\/p>\n<p>L\u2019accumulation progressive de ces mat\u00e9riaux construit un \u00e9difice, appel\u00e9 volcan. C\u2019est la nature du magma qui d\u00e9termine le r\u00e9gime d\u2019une \u00e9ruption volcanique et la forme que prend l\u2019\u00e9difice. Les laves tr\u00e8s fluides s\u2019\u00e9panchent sous forme de tr\u00e8s longues coul\u00e9es. Si elles sont suffisamment riches en gaz, les laves sont expuls\u00e9es sous forme d\u2019explosions relativement mod\u00e9r\u00e9es, aboutissant \u00e0 la formation d\u2019un c\u00f4ne de <a href=\"https:\/\/www.vulcania.com\/science\/reperes\/glossaire\/#1717142205856-6cce5450-d69b\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">scories<\/a>. \u00c0 l\u2019oppos\u00e9, les magmas visqueux qui parviennent \u00e0 la surface sont souvent accompagn\u00e9s par de fortes explosions dues \u00e0 leur richesse en gaz.
