L\u2019explosion, constitu\u00e9e de lave et de gaz br\u00fblants et de blocs de toutes tailles qui s\u2019\u00e9chappent \u00e0 des vitesses de plusieurs centaines de kilom\u00e8tres par heure, est tr\u00e8s destructrice, d\u2019autant qu\u2019elle est pr\u00e9c\u00e9d\u00e9e d\u2019une onde de choc ; ces puissants \u00e9coulements destructeurs sont appel\u00e9s nu\u00e9es ardentes, encore appel\u00e9es coul\u00e9es pyroclastiques. La masse de lave qui obstrue la chemin\u00e9e est lentement expuls\u00e9e entre deux explosions et forme un d\u00f4me p\u00e9l\u00e9en.
