Les gaz restent dissous et la lave s\u2019\u00e9panche tranquillement sur le fond de la mer. Aucune explosion ne peut se produire dans de telles conditions. L\u2019\u00e9coulement de lave \u00e0 1 000 \u00b0C sur le fond de la mer, o\u00f9 l\u2019eau ne d\u00e9passe pas 2 \u00b0C, aussi \u00e9trange qu\u2019il paraisse, est une r\u00e9alit\u00e9 : elle a \u00e9t\u00e9 observ\u00e9e et m\u00eame film\u00e9e. Plus des trois quarts des laves produites chaque ann\u00e9e sur Terre se mettent en place au fond des oc\u00e9ans et ces activit\u00e9s nous sont presque toujours invisibles. L\u00e0, dans le secret des profondeurs, naissent des morphologies particuli\u00e8res. Les laves prennent la forme de coussins : on les appelle \u00ab pillow-lavas \u00bb. \u00c0 l\u2019inverse, lorsque le volcan na\u00eet en mer \u00e0 faible profondeur, le contact de la lave et de l\u2019eau provoque de violentes explosions. La roche en fusion est brusquement \u00abtremp\u00e9e\u00bb (au sens o\u00f9 l\u2019on trempe de l\u2019acier) et donne naissance \u00e0 des fragments vitreux qui s\u2019accumulent sous forme de br\u00e8ches particuli\u00e8res, appel\u00e9es hyaloclastites.<\/p>\n<p class=\"bodytext\">Si l\u2019activit\u00e9 volcanique se poursuit, le volcan en cours de construction finit par \u00e9merger. D\u00e8s que le magma n\u2019est plus en contact avec l\u2019eau de mer, le dynamisme change radicalement. Dans le cas de magmas basaltiques, l\u2019activit\u00e9 est alors beaucoup moins explosive et devient hawaiienne ou <a href=\"\/science\/volcans\/differents-types-deruptions\/eruption-strombolienne\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">strombolienne<\/a>. L\u2019\u00e9volution du volcan s\u2019effectue alors comme sur la terre ferme.<\/p>\n<div id=\"c69956\" class=\"csc-default\">\n<p class=\"bodytext\">Il existe \u00e9galement des volcans emprisonn\u00e9s sous des glaciers ; c&rsquo;est notamment le cas en Islande. Lors des \u00e9ruptions, la glace fond partiellement, et les \u00e9ruptions se d\u00e9roulent selon les m\u00eames modalit\u00e9s qu\u2019en pr\u00e9sence d\u2019eau liquide. En outre, la fusion d\u2019\u00e9normes volumes de glace peut provoquer la formation de d\u00e9b\u00e2cles glaciaires (en islandais, \u00ab j\u00f6kulhlaups \u00bb) \u00e0 la p\u00e9riph\u00e9rie du glacier : d\u2019immenses fleuves de boue, charriant d\u2019\u00e9normes blocs de roche et de glace, d\u00e9ferlent sur la r\u00e9gion avoisinante, entra\u00eenant tout sur leur passage.<\/p>\n<p class=\"bodytext\">Les volcans sous-glaciaires pr\u00e9sentent une morphologie particuli\u00e8re. Dans les r\u00e9gions o\u00f9 les glaciers ont disparu, ils peuvent \u00eatre \u00e9tudi\u00e9s. Les montagnes \u00ab en table \u00bb d\u2019Islande en sont des exemples typiques.
