Son activit\u00e9 a d\u00e9but\u00e9 il y a 95 000 ans et s\u2019est arr\u00eat\u00e9e il y a 7 000 ans environ. Elle est r\u00e9put\u00e9e pour la vari\u00e9t\u00e9 de ses morphologies, caract\u00e9ristiques de diff\u00e9rents types d\u2019activit\u00e9s volcaniques. Ces formes sont remarquablement bien conserv\u00e9es, l\u2019\u00e9rosion n\u2019ayant pas eu le temps de les \u00e9mousser.[\/vc_column_text][vc_column_text]<\/p>\n<h2>Les grandes \u00e9tapes de sa formation<\/h2>\n<div id=\"c69980\" class=\"csc-default\">\n<ul>\n<li>Les premi\u00e8res manifestations datent de 95 000 \u00e0 90 000 ans environ : c\u2019est la p\u00e9riode de la formation du <a href=\"\/science\/reperes\/glossaire\/#1668609116035-93195f3b-71d11aa2-532d\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">maar<\/a> de St Hippolyte.<\/li>\n<li>Entre 70 000 ans et 60 000, les \u00e9ruptions se multiplient.<\/li>\n<li>Vient une accalmie de 15 000 ans : elle sera suivie du premier grand paroxysme de la cha\u00eene, avec un pic d\u2019activit\u00e9 il y a environ 30 000 ans.<\/li>\n<li>Entre 30 000 et 15 000 ans, nouvelle p\u00e9riode de repos, seulement interrompue par quelques rares \u00e9ruptions.<\/li>\n<li>De 15 000 \u00e0 12 000 ans, le second paroxysme de la cha\u00eene d\u00e9bute : formation du puy de Barme et du puy de C\u00f4me. C\u2019est aussi la fin de la p\u00e9riode glaciaire, le radoucissement du climat modifie le couvert v\u00e9g\u00e9tal et favorise la d\u00e9mographie humaine dans la r\u00e9gion. Il est ainsi \u00e9vident que des hommes ont assist\u00e9 \u00e0 des \u00e9ruptions volcaniques dans la Cha\u00eene des Puys.<\/li>\n<li>Les plus violentes \u00e9ruptions se produisent entre 12 000 et 8 500 ans. C\u2019est la p\u00e9riode de la formation des d\u00f4mes, en particulier : le Sarcoui, le puy de D\u00f4me, le puy Chopine. Les derni\u00e8res \u00e9ruptions auront lieu vers &#8211; 8 000 ans, plus au sud, formant les puys de la Vache et de Lassolas.<\/li>\n<li>Enfin, autour de &#8211; 7 000 ans et en moins de 200 ans, se forment les quatre volcans de l\u2019ensemble m\u00e9ridional, avec des \u00e9ruptions pour certaines violentes, notamment celle du Pavin.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/div>\n<div id=\"c69979\" class=\"csc-default\">\n<p class=\"bodytext\">La particularit\u00e9 de la Cha\u00eene des Puys est d\u2019\u00eatre compos\u00e9e de volcans \u00ab monog\u00e9niques \u00bb, c\u2019est-\u00e0-dire qu\u2019ils sont issus d\u2019une \u00e9ruption unique et br\u00e8ve (quelques semaines \u00e0 quelques mois pour la plupart d\u2019entre eux).<\/p>\n<h2>C\u00f4nes et coul\u00e9es de lave associ\u00e9es<\/h2>\n<p>Ces volcans ont habituellement la forme d\u2019un c\u00f4ne tronqu\u00e9, avec au sommet une d\u00e9pression circulaire bien visible : le crat\u00e8re. Au moment de l\u2019\u00e9ruption, la lib\u00e9ration des gaz provoque des explosions mod\u00e9r\u00e9es et rythm\u00e9es, le magma assez fluide \u00e9tant pulv\u00e9ris\u00e9 et projet\u00e9 en lambeaux. Les fragments de lave retombent ensuite et s\u2019accumulent en couches successives autour de la chemin\u00e9e volcanique. Si le magma a perdu une partie de ses gaz, ces explosions se rar\u00e9fient et il \u00e9merge de fa\u00e7on beaucoup plus calme, donnant naissance \u00e0 des coul\u00e9es de lave. Elles sortent en g\u00e9n\u00e9ral \u00e0 la base du c\u00f4ne de <a href=\"\/science\/reperes\/glossaire\/#1668609694206-fdde5179-1d9a1aa2-532d\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">scories<\/a>, s\u2019\u00e9panchent sur le plateau des D\u00f4mes ou empruntent les vall\u00e9es avoisinantes.<\/p>\n<h2>D\u00f4mes et coul\u00e9es pyroclastiques associ\u00e9es<\/h2>\n<p class=\"bodytext\">Les d\u00f4mes ont une forme arrondie \u00abde bol retourn\u00e9\u00bb et sont d\u00e9pourvus de crat\u00e8re. Ils r\u00e9sultent de l\u2019extrusion d\u2019un magma tr\u00e8s visqueux qui s\u2019accumule au-dessus du point de sortie. Cette extrusion est accompagn\u00e9e de ph\u00e9nom\u00e8nes explosifs parfois violents ; ceux-ci d\u00e9clenchent des <a href=\"\/science\/reperes\/glossaire\/#1668608517471-a821d179-2f531aa2-532d\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">avalanches de d\u00e9bris<\/a> et de gaz br\u00fblants (nu\u00e9es ardentes) ou de simples \u00e9croulements des flancs du d\u00f4me, produisant un talus de blocs et de cendres. Enfin, dans certains cas de viscosit\u00e9 extr\u00eame de la lave, celle-ci s\u2019extrude lentement \u00e0 l\u2019\u00e9tat presque solide sous la forme d\u2019un piston appel\u00e9 \u00ab aiguille \u00bb ou \u00ab protrusion \u00bb.<\/p>\n<h2>Maars<\/h2>\n<p class=\"bodytext\">Les maars sont des d\u00e9pressions volcaniques circulaires, souvent occup\u00e9es par un lac ou par une tourbi\u00e8re (pour les plus anciens). \u00c0 la diff\u00e9rence des c\u00f4nes et des d\u00f4mes, ces d\u00e9pressions ouvertes \u00e0 l\u2019emporte-pi\u00e8ce r\u00e9sultent d\u2019une s\u00e9rie de violentes explosions li\u00e9es \u00e0 la rencontre du magma avec des eaux superficielles. En effet, lors de sa migration vers la surface, le magma peut rencontrer l\u2019eau d\u2019une nappe phr\u00e9atique, d\u2019un lac ou d\u2019une rivi\u00e8re.<\/p>\n<p class=\"bodytext\">Sous l\u2019effet de la chaleur, cette eau est vaporis\u00e9e, donnant \u00e0 l\u2019activit\u00e9 un caract\u00e8re fortement explosif : c\u2019est ce qu\u2019on appelle une \u00ab \u00e9ruption phr\u00e9atomagmatique \u00bb.<\/p>\n<p class=\"bodytext\">Lors des explosions, le magma est pulv\u00e9ris\u00e9 sous forme de cendres et des d\u00e9p\u00f4ts stratifi\u00e9s caract\u00e9ristiques se forment. Ils constituent un anneau de projections ou un croissant autour du crat\u00e8re d\u2019explosion.
